Ewan McAleer This is a brief but lovely soundtrack written by a Scottish composer whose band, Katerwaul, I enjoy very much. Pretty relaxing string music, good for early mornings/late nights. Favorite track: Our Homes Are Not Our Own (Reprise).

about

When my long time collaborator, close friend and co founder of Factotum Films, Shaun Hughes told me he wanted his next film to be a Western... I laughed in his face. Now, some three years and a BAFTA win later I guess it is Shaun who is laughing now.

In those early exchanges, even before the first draft of the script was written we talked at great lengths about the Film's score. Westerns normally had such lush strings and great memorable melodies you could whistle. But this film was going to be very different and with it the Film Score had to be reminiscent of a Western Film Score, but be a different take on those traits.

The result was "A Long Way From Home". Keeping the tradition of an orchestral string arrangement but stripping it down to its very core. In the same way our characters are isolated, so too was the music. Instead of using an entire ensemble we employed only a string quartet and even then only 3 of the 4 instruments would be present at the same time.

The score is made up from certain themes. With each instrument assigned a character, these themes could be played solo, or in tandem, occasionally able of intertwining to become a grander piece.

Each piece was performed entirely live to the film and mixed at a later stage. In the piece "A Long Way From Home" Gergely starts on the Violin when playing Grace's theme then half way switches, upon the introduction of James, to the Viola for his theme.

This album is an arrangement of all these different movements from the film. Without the images, the score ripped straight from the film wouldn't work. I spent months swapping parts over and sections meeting different sections until I finally came up with something that was more coherent as an album, as an experience for the listener.

So here it is, the soundtrack to our BAFTA winning short film "No More Shall We Part". It is one of my proudest achievements as a musician and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it.
